Introduction:

In recent years, vaping has emerged as a popular trend, especially among the younger generation. Marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (EC) have gained significant traction. However, beneath the surface, vaping poses serious health risks that are often overlooked. In this article, we’ll delve into the world of vaping, unraveling the misconceptions and understanding the real health implications associated with these devices. I have noticed that several of my clients who

Understanding Vaping:

Vaping involves the use of battery-powered devices that heat a liquid based on propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG). This liquid, when vaporized, creates an aerosol containing nicotine, flavors, and various chemical components. Despite their sleek appearance, these devices mimic the look of conventional cigarettes (CC), blurring the lines between the two.

The Deceptive Allure:

One of the concerning aspects of vaping is its popularity among young adults and teens. Between 2011-2014, the number of youths using EC tripled, with 23% of high school-aged students using tobacco in some form by 2022. The appeal of flavored vaping liquids and the belief that vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking have contributed to this rise.

The Reality Check:

Contrary to popular belief, vaping is far from harmless. The aerosols generated by these devices contain toxic compounds, including formaldehydes, acetaldehyde, acetone, and nitrosamines. Moreover, the heating of these liquids can lead to the production of harmful substances, making vaping potentially as damaging as smoking traditional cigarettes.

Health Impact: A Closer Look:

  1. Respiratory System: Vaping may contribute to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and increased airway resistance. The chemicals inhaled from e-cigarettes can cause respiratory issues akin to those caused by smoking.
  2. Cardiovascular System: Vaping chemicals harm the cardiovascular system, increasing blood pressure and arterial stiffness. Acute effects include heightened blood pressure and a prothrombotic effect due to platelet aggregation.
  3. Reproductive System: Vaping during pregnancy may lead to neurodevelopmental issues in the fetus and adversely affect male reproductive health. Animal studies also indicate EC induce oxidative stress, and significantly decrease sperm count and viability. E-liquids with or without nicotine have detrimental effects on sperm numbers and alter sperm production. Furthermore the flavouring chemicals impact sperm motility.
  4. Neurological Impact: Nicotine in vaping liquids affects the developing brain in adolescents, potentially leading to cognitive impairments and increased impulsivity. Chronic nicotine exposure may result in depressed mood and poor arousal.
  5. Heavy Metal Toxicity Impact: Toxic metals contained in E-cigarettes and their health impacts are listed in the following table. Also see: https://www.holistichealth.com.au/hair-mineral-and-heavy-metal-testing-why-how-and-what-do-i-do-with-the-information/:
Nickel
  • Damages lungs, liver, kidneys
  •  Lung inflammation and oxidative stress leading to alveolar epithelium hyperplasia, fibrosis and atrophy of the nasal epithelium
Chromium
  • Induces DNA damage
  • May cause ulceration, chronic rhinitis and pharyngitis
  • Impairs lung function
Lead
  • Nervous system: disrupts neuronal migration and differentiation of glial cells
  • Inhibits Ca release and impacts mitochondrial function
Cadmium
  • Immune system: diminishes activated B cells and their viability and proliferation
Tin
  • Decreases haematocrit, erythrocyte and haemoglobin levels in animal studies
Copper
  • Respiratory irritant
Aluminum
  • Competes with Ca for absorption and affects bone mineralisation

Conclusion:

While vaping might have been introduced as a safer alternative, the evidence suggests otherwise. The colorful packaging and enticing flavors mask a host of health risks, especially for the younger generation. It’s crucial to understand the real dangers behind the vapor clouds. Education and awareness are key; being informed allows individuals to make healthier choices for themselves and future generations. As we uncover more about the long-term effects of vaping, it’s essential to prioritize our health over passing trends. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and above all, prioritize your well-being.
